Our Mastering  Philosophy

The "Loudness Wars" rage on and we are on the front lines of the battle.  Loud can seem "better" on first listen, but why destroy the audio you have worked so hard to create. “How loud do you want it?” is a legitimate question. How good can it sound should be another.  Loud does not always equals good.   LOUD CD is a relative term. The question to ask is loud as compared to what?  What do you lose to make your CD loud?

To make a recording “louder” in the digital realm you have to decrease the relative dynamics of the recording you are mastering.  Dynamics or the dynamic range of the music is the range of amplitude (“volume” in lay terms) between the softest sound and the loudest sound on the recording.  Dynamic range that wide gives you depth to the sound, a clarity and punch of the natural music.  Digital audio has the ability to handle very wide dynamic range.  It is not the weak link in the audio change in this regard.  So what happened?   Listen to these audio examples found on you tube.We did not produce it but whole heartily endorse the point Matt Mayfield makes.

That being said it is up to the client ultimately to decide where on the scale of  LOUD their recordings should fall.  Your recordings can sound great, and have good dynamic range and not be crushed. Mastering is all about the final artistic vision that unifies and creates the overall sound of an album. Through the proper use of compression, limiting, EQ and other very simple processes the sound of the album can be unified and polished.    More important than crushed is a good tonal balance, clean starts and stops, proper placement in the negative space.   Mastering is the last defense between your recording and end user, AKA your audience.  Let us help you put your best recordings forward and give your audience a reason to turn up your music to 11!
