The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra’s live Saturday night radio broadcasts are the airwaves this season on Saint Louis Public Radio 90.7.
In a break with the modern tape delayed “live” orchestral broadcasts which are typically edited and produced off site, this series is actually broadcast from the hall in real time, a true live broadcast.  The Pan Galactic Company is reprising its role in technical support of the broadcasts.  The SLSO doesn’t have dedicated space to produce the vocal content sections of the live radio broadcast, so a space was chosen to act as a stand in broadcast center.   altWith an extremely tight budget, an improvised broadcast booth was developed by Paul Hennerich to meet needs of the broadcasts for last season.
To get  Hennerich’s mix from the Symphony’s control room to the Voice over broadcast location the audio feed is digitally in 24 bits @ 88.2 and then decoded. This avoids any signal loss from the 2 story distance to the broadcast control board, this year operated by Mary Edwards of KWMU. Mary balances the voices and back ground ambience you hear on your radio. Because of the found space, the board op has to sit in the same space as the talent, requiring a delicate touch and careful balance. Pan Galactic is excited to be a part of this live radio project.  The Broadcasts can be heard most Saturday nights at 8pm CST on 90.7 KWMU Saint Louis Public Radio, or online at the following links.
